Koan Paintings
In Zen Buddhism, koans are succinct paradoxical questions or stories used to help students break away from conceptual thought. I try to make paintings like that. Juxtaposing layers of found posters with the smooth sheen of resin, each piece becomes a portrait of my mind.
Racing between what I think I want and what I know I need, I let the city be my palate. The posters I collect go up on the canvas without thought, instinctual, immediate, direct experience. In contrast, pouring the resin pour is almost a ritual, slow, methodical, minimalist calligraphy. Like meditation, my work is a process of inquiry, wiping the dust off the mirror to reconnect with the stillness beneath.
